The world of the Carry On Shop

Customers of the Carry On Shop come from six of the seven continents. Daily visitors include students, researchers and residents from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Oceana. Antarctica coming soon!

Recently a Bloomberg School of Public Health student from Ethiopia came to COS looking for a winter coat. She had mistakenly left hers on the airplane when returning to Baltimore after winter break. She found a beautiful suede/shearling jacket at 50% off and was more than thrilled!

Two days later a researcher from the Indian continent came into the shop to decompress after a long week, and take advantage of the 50% off sale. She left with a ¾ length fur (half off the already good COS price), numerous work jackets including Lafayette 148, Boden, and Talbots, a
dress or three, women’s size10 shoes, and an overcoat for her husband, to name a few of her finds. We were delighted to have helped as her personal shopper and grateful that her purchases support the mission of the Women’s Board to support Johns Hopkins.

The Carry On Shop is part of a lively, thriving, international community on the East Baltimore
Johns Hopkins Campus.

Stevie Daniels and WMAR visit Renewal!

Stevie Daniels came to shop.  She loved what she saw, and returned to Renewal two days later — with a WMAR camera team to film a feature on the store!   The video footage shows the many departments, outstanding choices, and sophisticated display of clothing, accessories and jewelry at Renewal.  Susan Posner gave an outstanding presentation of Renewal as shopping for a cause, promoting sustainability, and providing affordable fashion.  Susan says somehow a 90-minute visit turned into a fabulous 2-minute television feature.  Stevie says she is now a 100% regular customer!

The Women’s Board invites you to the Farmers’ Market

The Carry On Shop will have a table at the Johns Hopkins Farmers’ Market on Thursday, September 28, and Thursday, October 12, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on the walkway between the cancer research buildings. The table will feature goods from the Carry On Shop as well as Johns Hopkins logo wear and gift items, which also are available at the Women’s Board Hospital Gift Shops.

The JHMI Office of Sustainability sponsors the Farmers’ Market, to bring local, nutritious food to the Johns Hopkins community. It is managed by Reduction in Motion, an environmental consulting firm, with over 10 years of experience in establishing such markets and a goal to accomplish zero waste. The Market provides a time to mingle with employees, students, patients, families, and community members, while browsing varied offerings, enjoying treats at pop- up eateries, and taking home healthy foods.

It is fitting that the Carry On Shop, located on East Monument Street, be present at the Market. The Women’s Board Shop and Renewal Upscale Resale, at Hunt Valley Towne Centre, practice sustainability and reduction in waste through resale, giving new life to donations. Come visit the Market and the COS team!

WYPR and Sustainable Fashion

On WYPR, Midday with Tom Hall, Joan Quinn and Susan Posner did a fantastic job of promoting sustainable fashion and the Carry On Shop and Renewal Upscale Resale.   Click here to listen what they had to say, and hear the words of a woman who called in.  A dedicated “thrifter” who praised hospital resale shops as being the best for great finds, excellent prices, and clean, welcoming environments.  When Tom asked Joan and Susan what they wished for the shops — a steady stream of generous donors and new and returning shoppers!

Sustainability

At noon on Thursday, April 20, on WYPR, Tom Hall is doing an interview with Susan Posner and Joan Quinn about the contributions the Carry On Shop and Renewal Upscale Resale make to sustainability. Earth Day, April 22, brings protecting our planet to the forefront, and the Women’s Board has been helping through resale for almost 100 years. We’ve been recycling the closets of loyal and new donors and shoppers for a long time! Tune in!!

Carry On Shop and Renewal Upscale Resale remind Board members and
sustainers that donations of quality items from family, friends, and their own closets are essential to their success. Closets are being cleaned, people are moving, their lives are changing, please reach out and remind them the Women’s Board will offer their treasures a new life, and they will be supporting the mission of the Board to advance patient care and provide medical and nursing scholarships at Johns Hopkins.
