How Funds Are Disbursed

Each year the Board solicits proposals from the Clinical Departments of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Hospital Relations Committee of the Board reviews requests for funding using an evaluation process resembling the one used by the National Institutes of Health. Priority is usually given to projects that will affect patient care most directly.

In the past, proceeds have provided start-up funds for the Child Life Program, Diabetes Center, Child Advocacy Program, School of Nursing Interactive Library, and Children’s Center Family Resource Library. Major gifts have included $1,000,000 to the Comprehensive Cancer Center, $500,000 to the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center, and $300,000 to launch the Breast Cancer Screening Center.

In the fall of 2002, the Board pledged to support construction of the new Children’s Tower. Our pledge of $2 million dollars to the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center was fulfilled in FY 2009.

Application Process

Each fall, grant applications are solicited from the Chairmen of the Clinical Departments of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Each Clinical Department may submit only ONE grant application per year. Applications are due January 9, and results are announced on May 1.
